What Backdated UIF Involves
Backdating your UIF registration means going back to the date your domestic worker first worked 24 or more hours per month for you and declaring all contributions owed from that date to the present. This involves registering yourself as a domestic employer, registering your worker under your UIF number, submitting monthly declarations for every month of employment, and paying the outstanding contributions — 2% of monthly wages per month. Penalties and interest may apply, but the Department of Labour has discretion in how these are applied, particularly where employers come forward voluntarily before an inspection.
The Cost of Coming Forward Voluntarily
As an example: a domestic worker employed for two years at R5,000 per month would generate backdated UIF contributions of approximately R2,400 (2% x R5,000 x 24 months). This is the base amount. Penalties add to this, but the total is typically far less than what would be imposed following an inspection where non-compliance was discovered. Voluntary compliance demonstrates good faith and is treated more favourably by the Department.
